![]() ![]() ![]() The introduction of My Ántonia is called a frame, or framing device. Jim gives the folder to the speaker, but not before writing "My Ántonia" on the front of it. He had just finished it the night before and says that it was written haphazardly, just as he remembered it. He tells the speaker that he has been recording his memories of the girl, and a few months later, he brings a folder containing his writing to the speaker. For both of them, she symbolizes their childhood on the frontier, and Jim mentions that he thinks about her quite a bit. That day on the train, they talk about a Bohemian girl that they both knew named Ántonia. A quiet man, Jim loves the American West that he grew up in and is able to pursue his passion through his work with the railroad. ![]() It is hot and dusty on the train, and it reminds them of the weather growing up on the frontier.Īccording to the speaker, Jim Burden now works for the railroad in New York and is unhappily married to a dull woman who is a patroness to a number of mediocre artists and writers. The anonymous speaker in this introduction tells us that last summer, he unexpectedly met his friend on a train and that they spent the journey reminiscing about their childhood in Nebraska. The first-person introduction is written in the voice of a childhood friend of Jim Burden, who is the narrator for the remainder of the novel. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() I'm unsure what this book was trying to achieve, is it meant to be humorous or disturbing? After doing some research and finding it on a "most disturbing books ever written list" I was feeling pretty let down. My favourite story was the one where the guy put a stick of wax in his dickhole and masterbated. "This book will make grown men cringe" well if that's the case why the fuck aren't I cringing?! Anyway I didn't even flinch while reading it, but I did have a big chuckle the entire time reading it because of the stupidity of the stories & the writing is pretty good. Apparently this book is so disturbing and disgusting that people fainted at a live reading of it and others literally vomited their guts up. I was sent this book by a friend who knows I have a warped sense of humor. ![]() ** This short story is an excerpt from the novel Haunted** ![]() ![]() Just seconds after 80s sensation Great White took the stage, pyrotechnics ignited a fire that raced up the walls and across the ceiling of the packed venue. Certainly names and terminology from ancient cultures, which is a problem in a book dealing chiefly with these subjects, but even common words in modern English parlance. ![]() The major warning, which could stem from a pet peeve of mine, is that the narrator mispronounces words very frequently. The book itself is a wonderful, incisively- researched treatise on comparative mythology, religion and philosophy, containing illustrations of various symbols, archeological groundplans, etc., so if you are the type like myself to read and listen definitely get the physical or digital copy of the printed book for full context. The Mispronounced Teachings of All the Ages ![]() ![]() In early 2016, in the last months of Obama’s presidency, Willa Knox, a once gainfully employed, now stutteringly freelance journalist, and her academic husband Iano, who has spent his career vainly chasing tenure, inherit a dilapidated late-19th-century house near the college where Iano has secured a 12-month contract. In fact, Unsheltered contains not just one disintegrating house but two, built on the same plot of land in New Jersey and housing two different families 150 years apart. Barbara Kingsolver’s new novel is clearly inspired by the crisis of Trump’s America, but it is also about what it might mean to live when previously trusted ideologies or economic systems are challenged to breaking point, and what might follow in their wake.
